ABOUT
Dr. Alžběta Solarczyk Krausová
Founder of Respectful AI
Twenty years ago I started working on a question that almost nobody thought was urgent: Where does a human being end and the technology begins? I've explored this question through AI and robotics law, brain–computer interfaces, privacy, copyright and neurolaw. I still have not found the definitive answer... maybe it is because the relationship between a human and a technology develops and changes constantly. However, the role of a human has never been more important and yet more complicated. So lately I have been asking myself – what happens to a person when technology gets close enough to think alongside them?

My journey
The long version
I trained as a lawyer, and my doctorate – Law and New Forms of Semi-Artificial Life – is on the legal status of hybrid robots that run on biological brains. Before that I spent five years researching the legal aspects of brain–computer interfaces. One asks what happens when technology enters the human. The other asks what happens when biology enters the machine. They are the same question from two directions, and I have never really stopped asking it.
I spent most of my career in research, latterly leading the Center for Innovations and Cyberlaw Research at the Institute of State and Law of the Czech Academy of Sciences. I founded and chaired SOLAIR, an international conference on society, law, artificial intelligence and robotics, through eight editions – co-organised at various points with UNCITRAL, UNIDROIT, Microsoft, DLA Piper, Charles University and the Czech AI Association.
In 2023 I founded Respectful AI, and in 2026 I left academia to run it full time.
The move was less of a change than it sounds. The work has always been the same: taking questions that look abstract and showing people why they are not. The difference is that I now do it in rooms where decisions get made rather than in rooms where they get analysed.
I don't sell AI systems. I have no product to defend and no vendor to please. That is usually why organisations ask me what they should actually do.
